There is a hidden key to spiritual and psychological growth—one that has been present in every culture and every era, yet rarely named directly. This book reveals that key: the living encounter between consciousness and the inner world, a process known as active imagination in psychology and as visioning in some Indigenous cultures of North America.

 

Across history, transformative moments have often been described as visions: Buddha’s confrontation with Māra, Muhammad’s meeting with the angel Gabriel, Paul’s dramatic conversion, Peter’s experience on the rooftop, and the powerful encounters reported by Indigenous visionaries of the Great Plains and Pacific Northwest.

 

However, an online etymology dictionary defines vision as “something seen in the imagination or in the supernatural.” In a vision, the person is passive—merely an observer. It becomes active imagination when one enters the imaginal world consciously, engages with what is encountered, and responds as if it were as real as the outer world. For this reason, the word vision is a misnomer for these experiences; each of these figures was actively involved in what unfolded within.

 

Drawing from spirituality, psychology, and decades of clinical experience, this book shows how active imagination shaped the lives of Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, Paul, Jarena Lee, Arthur Koestler, and Indigenous people. This capacity is inherent to human beings. When we turn inward with attention, sincerity, and courage, something meets us. Something responds.

 

Active imagination is not an escape from life but a way to consciously include the inner world in our human journey, just like the historical people previously named. Imagination is the bridge to the rich reality within and what is often surprising is how the inner world will offer insight, guidance and correction to our path.  By connecting to the wisdom within, we can discover a deeper meaning to our lives and hidden possibilities to enflesh.
